Did you know that Rovaniemi is the official home town of Santa Claus?
Rovaniemi is a city in Finland and the capital of the former Province of Lapland. It is located near the Arctic Circle at the confluence of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers in the Region of Lapland. Southeast of Rovaniemi is the municipality of Ranua, where the famous Ranua Wildlife Park zoo is.
Rovaniemi is known as the home town of Santa Claus. Santa Claus Village is also in the city, as well as the Arctic Science Centre and Provincial Museum of Lapland Arktikum.
Come to experience and fall in love with the exotic winter of Lapland.
You can meet Santa Claus at Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle. At Santa Claus Office, you can see the elves doing their daily work and get to know various secrets of Santa Claus.
Guests of all ages are always welcome to Santa Claus Office. The Office is open every day of the year free of charge.
The Arctic Region starts at the Arctic Circle. The border can be crossed north of Rovaniemi at Santa Claus Village.
Almost every reindeer ride, husky dog sled ride and snowmobile safari includes crossing the Arctic Circle. Be alert when engaging in various activities to know when you have entered the arctic side.
Did you know that it is also possible to go under the Arctic Circle? This is possible at Santa Claus's home cave in Santa Park where you can go 50 meters underground.
Northern lights can be seen approximately 150 times a year in the skies above Rovaniemi. The northern lights season lasts from the end of August to April.
Northern lights can also be seen in the city centre if the weather is bright enough and there are no clouds. However, light pollution is a problem when trying to see northern lights. Within walking distance from the city there are multiple great spots for seeing northern lights in almost perfect conditions.
We organise various northern lights excursions during which you will surely get the best experience of this natural phenomenon. We can also organise an unfogettable night in a northern lights glass igloo for you.
Snow and ice can usually be found in Rovaniemi from November to April. When snow arrives, the city turns into a giant playground full of locals and tourists. Travellers can see the snowfields and ice formations of the area during various safaris at both day and night.
Many different buildings are made from ice. You can sleep in an igloo, eat in an ice restaurant and play in snow castles. Ski trails and ice fishing spots keep you active during the days. A walk in the magical nature of Finland's beautiful scenery makes you forget your everyday worries. The bravest go ice swimming.
The food of Lapland is plain and ruggedly beautiful. The local food is like the scenery around it. Four seasons guarantee that different tastes and ingredients will make it fresh to the table.
The food can be eaten both outside by a campfire and at a fancy dinner.
